Faith, Doubt, and Healing After Spiritual Harm

Faith can be one of the most grounding forces in a person's life until it isn't. If you're living in a smaller community in British Columbia — whether in Castlegar, Fernie, Nelson, Creston, or Rossland in the Kootenays, Terrace, Prince Rupert, or Smithers in the North, Quesnel or Merritt in the Interior, Revelstoke or Squamish in the mountains, Fort St. John in the Peace Region, or Powell River on the coast, your faith community may be tightly woven into your daily life. When doubt sets in, when a church experience causes harm, or when spirituality starts to feel more like a burden than a comfort, it can affect every part of your world.

When Faith Becomes Complicated

Doubting what you once believed doesn't mean something is wrong with you. Questioning is a natural part of spiritual growth, and for many people, it's the beginning of a deeper, more honest relationship with what they hold sacred.

But in a small town like Smithers or Creston, where church can be the community's social centre, stepping back from faith can feel like losing everything: your friendships, your family, expectations, and your sense of belonging. You may worry about being judged, excluded, or misunderstood.

For some, the struggle goes beyond doubt. Spiritual abuse, manipulation by religious leaders, shaming around identity or choices, or being told that your suffering is a failure of faith. These are real wounds. Whether you experienced harm in a congregation in Fort St. John, Prince Rupert, or Powell River, the pain of being hurt by the very community that was supposed to care for you can run deep. In communities with only one or two churches, leaving can mean losing your entire social network.

Others may be exploring spirituality for the first time and drawn to questions about meaning, purpose, and connection, but unsure where to start. Whether you're in Merritt, Terrace, or Quesnel, you deserve a space to explore those questions without pressure.

Faith-Informed and Trauma-Informed Care

Our group of registered clinical counsellors understand that faith and spirituality are deeply personal. Our counsellors offer faith-informed and trauma-informed care, so we can walk alongside you whether you're rebuilding your faith, sitting with doubt, healing from spiritual harm, or leaving religion altogether.

Faith-informed counselling doesn't mean we push a particular belief system. It means we take your spiritual life seriously, because faith can affect who you are. If your faith matters to you, it belongs in the room. If faith has hurt you, that belongs in the room, too.

Because we offer online counselling across British Columbia, you don't need to find support in your own town. Whether you're connecting from Nelson, Revelstoke, Squamish, Fernie, Rossland, Castlegar, or any other community in BC, you can speak with a registered clinical counsellor who will meet you where you are spiritually and emotionally.
