What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for mental health issues. It reduces distress and improves daily functioning. CBT works for school-aged children and young people, and with adjustments, it can also help kids as young as four.
CBT teaches individuals to change how they:
Think
Act
Feel
This therapy helps children and teens understand their thoughts and feelings, enabling them to manage challenging situations effectively. It encourages them to face fears instead of avoiding them (for anxiety) or become more active (for depression).
CBT can be done individually or in groups.
CBT is effective for several issues, including:
Depression and anxiety (especially mild to moderate cases, and it can be as effective as medication. Children and teens receiving CBT are less likely to relapse)
Chronic pain
Eating disorders
Low self-esteem
Anger issues
Substance use
Obsessive-compulsive disorder
Trauma-related disorders (A version called Trauma-Focused CBT works well for children dealing with trauma.).
