  • Is counselling covered by insurance/third-party payers?

We strongly recommend that you consult with your employer and/or insurance provider to find out what your plan covers. They will tell you which credentials your counsellor needs to be covered and how much they will pay. Once you understand your coverage, you can make an informed decision without any financial surprises. Sometimes, people ask the counsellor directly about coverage, but the counsellor might not have that information. Insurance companies do not share plan details with anyone except you; therefore, your counsellor cannot determine your plan's coverage. Only you can obtain that information.

  • Do you do direct billing for my insurance/benefits?

We provide direct billing in some cases where specific funding is approved (e.g., Autism Funding, Work BC, ICBC, veteran affairs). If you are paying out of pocket, you make the payment, receive the receipts, and can submit your receipts for reimbursement once you confirm your coverage for counselling.

  • How long are sessions?

The sessions are 50 minutes for individual sessions and 90 minutes for couples and families.

  • What happens during my first appointment?

You will receive a reminder from Janne App with the date, time and a link for your session. You do not need to download anything. You click on the button to start your sessions. It is essential to have a safe and private space where you can freely discuss without distractions.

Your counsellor will conduct an initial assessment, which involves gathering information and exploring ideas about what you’d like to gain from counselling at this time. Your counsellor will guide you through the first session and let you know if there is anything else they need from you. In your first appointment, you can get a sense of what it will be like to work with your counsellor.  Your counsellor will create the most effective way to help you achieve your goals through counselling.

  • How many sessions will I need?

The number of counselling sessions needed for your counselling depends on many factors. This will be discussed with your counsellor and may range from weeks to several months. It will depend on your needs, availability, and goals.

  • What types of counselling do you offer?

We offer a comprehensive range of evidence-based therapeutic techniques drawn from multiple established approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns; Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), designed to help individuals manage emotions and improve interpersonal effectiveness; Bowen Family Systems Theory, which emphasizes the impact of familial relationships on mental health; and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which targets the emotional bonds within relationships to foster connection and understanding. Our goal is to tailor these methods to meet the unique needs of each individual, promoting healing and personal growth.

  • What if I am unable to attend my appointment?

If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment, we kindly ask that you contact us. To avoid incurring a cancellation fee, please provide us with notice at least 48 hours in advance (excluding weekends and holidays). This allows us to manage our schedule effectively and ensures that our counsellors' valuable time is available to other clients seeking support.

  • What is the cancellation policy?

Since your appointment time is specifically reserved for you, we require at least 48 hours' notice for cancellations, excluding weekends and holidays. This policy helps us manage our schedule and allows our therapists to offer their limited time to clients on the waiting list who need support. If you cancel within the 48-hour window by logging in to your Janne Account, please be aware that the full session fee will still be charged.

  • Do you offer in-person counselling?

We can refer you to a counsellor who provides in-person counselling.

  • How is counselling going to help me?

Counselling provides a wealth of benefits that can profoundly transform an individual's life. It fosters improved self-esteem, empowering individuals to recognize their inherent worth and capabilities. Through personalized strategies for altering negative behaviours, counselling encourages positive change and personal growth. Additionally, it contributes to an overall enhancement of mood and well-being, helping individuals cultivate a more optimistic outlook on life. By addressing and alleviating feelings of depression and anxiety, counselling creates a safe space for emotional healing and resilience. Furthermore, it nurtures healthier, more fulfilling relationships with others, allowing individuals to communicate effectively and connect on a deeper level.

  • How does couples therapy work?

In your initial counselling meeting, you and your partner will sit down together with the counsellor to discuss your concerns. Following this session, each of you will engage in separate individual meetings with the counsellor, allowing for a deeper exploration of your thoughts and feelings. After these particular sessions, you will reconvene with the counsellor for another joint meeting. During this session, the therapist will share their insights and recommendations, carefully guiding you toward constructive steps that support the health and growth of your relationship.

  • What is the difference between seeing a therapist, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist?

The main difference between a therapist and a psychologist lies primarily in their levels of education and training. Psychologists are registered with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (CPBC). Psychologists have completed a doctoral degree in psychology, which includes an additional two to four years of post-secondary education beyond a bachelor’s degree. This training focuses on advanced psychological theories that enable them to administer standardized psychological assessments (e.g., IQ testing, learning disabilities) and provide therapy.

On the other hand, clinical counsellors can come from a variety of educational backgrounds, including degrees in social work, counselling, or marriage and family therapy. In the psychotherapy room, they all hold either a master’s or doctoral degree. While they are skilled in providing psychotherapy, they may not have the extensive training in psychological testing.

Psychiatrists, distinct from both psychotherapists/clinical counsellors, as well as psychologists, are medical doctors who have completed medical school and a residency in psychiatry. This medical background gives psychiatrists the qualifications necessary to diagnose mental health disorders and prescribe medications as part of treatment, offering a unique approach that can include both therapeutic and pharmacological interventions.

  • What is the difference between CCC, RCC, CCPA, and CPA?

Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) are part of a provincial association, the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. In contrast, the Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) are part of national organizations.

  • Is the information I shared kept confidential?

The Psychotherapy Room follow the BCACC and CCPA ethical and legal guidelines. This means that the information shared during your counselling session is not shared with anyone unless you’ve given written consent. However, if the court orders your files, a judge asks your counsellor to appear in court, or if there is a possibility of harm to self and/or to another person, then the therapist is mandated to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities.
